When John Legge first started teaching Indonesian history at the University of Western
Australia in the mid-1940s there were very few resources available in English for teaching or
research on Indonesia. Fortunately one of the books that was available was J.S Furnivall’s
Netherlands India.
This, along with Furnivall’s better-known comparative study of the
Netherlands East Indies and Burma, Colonial Policy and Practice, has remained on reading
lists of courses on Southeast Asian studies ever since. Furnivall’s work is frequently cited,
and although not as frequently as that of Clifford Geertz and Benedict Anderson, probably the
most famous of scholars of Indonesia, Furnivall still has what national funding bodies call
‘high impact’.
